It is important to understand the different mechanisms involved in interaction of pathogen with plants to develop novel management strategy against HLB. However, until now there has been no control strategy to manage this disease \u003citalic\u003ein vitro\u003c/italic\u003e and on large scale in citrus grove. We found that, indigenous endophyte \u003citalic\u003eBacillus subtilis\u003c/italic\u003e L1-21, a patented strain isolated from healthy citrus tree, may have the potential to reduce the impact of pathogen through restructuring of core endophytes.\nResults\n\nA novel half-leaf method was developed to test the efficacy of \u003citalic\u003eB. subtilis\u003c/italic\u003e L1-21 against \u003citalic\u003eC\u003c/italic\u003elas. Concentration of \u003citalic\u003eB. subtilis\u003c/italic\u003e L1-21 at 10\u003csup\u003e4\u003c/sup\u003e cfu ml\u003csup\u003e− 1\u003c/sup\u003e resulted in a 1000-fold reduction in \u003citalic\u003eC\u003c/italic\u003elas copy densities per gram of leaf midrib (10\u003csup\u003e7\u003c/sup\u003e to 10\u003csup\u003e4\u003c/sup\u003e) by 4 d after treatment. With endophytes, where HLB incidence was reduced to \u0026lt; 3% and \u003citalic\u003eC\u003c/italic\u003elas copy density was reduced from 10\u003csup\u003e9\u003c/sup\u003e to 10\u003csup\u003e4\u003c/sup\u003e pathogen g\u003csup\u003e− 1\u003c/sup\u003e of diseased leaf midrib. We found that 16 of 93 tree samples became \u003citalic\u003eC\u003c/italic\u003elas-free and functional pathways and pathogen resistance genes were regulated in diseased citrus trees after treatment.\nConclusions\n\nThis is the first large-scale study using an indigenous endophyte and shows its potential utility in sustainable disease management through strengthening the citrus microbiome.\u003c/p\u003e","long_citation_html":"Munir et al.
