This study determined the prevalence of \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e in symptomatic and asymptomatic stool samples from children living in Iquitos, Peru. Stool samples from 215 children with diarrhea and 50 stool samples from children without diarrhea under the age of two were evaluated using a multiplex qPCR assay to detect \u003cjats:italic\u003eCampylobacter\u003c/jats:italic\u003e spp. (16S rRNA), \u003cjats:italic\u003eCampylobacter jejuni\u003c/jats:italic\u003e / \u003cjats:italic\u003eCampylobacter coli\u003c/jats:italic\u003e (\u003cjats:italic\u003ecadF\u003c/jats:italic\u003e gene), \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e (\u003cjats:italic\u003elpxA\u003c/jats:italic\u003e), and \u003cjats:italic\u003eShigella\u003c/jats:italic\u003e spp. (\u003cjats:italic\u003eipaH)\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e was detected in 7.9% (17/215) symptomatic samples and 4.0% (2/50) asymptomatic samples. The association between diarrhea and the presence of these targets was evaluated using univariate logistic regressions. \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e was not associated with diarrhea. Fifty-one percent (75/146) of \u003cjats:italic\u003eCampylobacter\u003c/jats:italic\u003e positive fecal samples were negative for \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003ejejuni\u003c/jats:italic\u003e, \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003ecoli\u003c/jats:italic\u003e, and \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e via qPCR. Shotgun metagenomics confirmed the presence of \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e among 13 out of 14 positive \u003cjats:italic\u003eC\u003c/jats:italic\u003e. \u003cjats:italic\u003einfans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e positive stool samples. \u003cjats:italic\u003eC infans\u003c/jats:italic\u003e explained only 20.7% of the diagnostic gap in stools from children with diarrhea and 16.7% of the gap in children without diarrhea.
