Due to difficulties in establishing axenic culture, phytoplasmas were assigned to a provisional genus, ‘\u003cjats:italic\u003eCandidatus\u003c/jats:italic\u003ePhytoplasma’, and the genus was embraced within the order\u003cjats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" content-type=\"order\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http://dx.doi.org/10.1601/nm.4811\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:italic\u003eAcholeplasmatales\u003c/jats:italic\u003e\u003c/jats:ext-link\u003e\u003c/jats:named-content\u003e. However, phytoplasmas differ significantly from species of the genus\u003cjats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" content-type=\"genus\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http://dx.doi:10.1601/nm.4813\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:italic\u003eAcholeplasma\u003c/jats:italic\u003e\u003c/jats:ext-link\u003e\u003c/jats:named-content\u003ein their habitat specificities, modes of life, metabolic capabilities, genomic architectures, and phylogenetic positions. This communication describes the unique ecological, nutritional, biochemical, genomic and phylogenetic properties that distinguish phytoplasmas from species of the genus\u003cjats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" content-type=\"genus\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http://dx.doi:10.1601/nm.4813\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:italic\u003eAcholeplasma\u003c/jats:italic\u003e\u003c/jats:ext-link\u003e\u003c/jats:named-content\u003eand all other taxa in the class\u003cjats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" content-type=\"class\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http://dx.doi.org/10.1601/nm.4612\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\u003e\u003cjats:italic\u003eMollicutes\u003c/jats:italic\u003e\u003c/jats:ext-link\u003e\u003c/jats:named-content\u003e.
