Using PCR amplification and sequencing of the citrate synthase‐encoding gene (\u003cjats:italic\u003eglt\u003c/jats:italic\u003eA), we detected a new rickettsial genotype, which we named ‘\u003cjats:italic\u003eCandidatus Rickettsia tarasevichiae\u003c/jats:italic\u003e.’ This bacterium was found in 9.27%, 10.0%, and 20.5% of the ticks collected in western Siberia, eastern Siberia, and the southern Urals, respectively. ‘\u003cjats:italic\u003eCandidatus Rickettsia tarasevichiae\u003c/jats:italic\u003e’ exhibited a 98% and 96% nucleotide sequence homology, with the 16S rDNA and \u003cjats:italic\u003eglt\u003c/jats:italic\u003eA sequence, respectively, of \u003cjats:italic\u003eR. canadensis\u003c/jats:italic\u003e, a rickettsia previously only found in \u003cjats:italic\u003eHaemaphysalis leporispalustris\u003c/jats:italic\u003e ticks in North America. The phylogenetic analysis of ‘\u003cjats:italic\u003eCandidatus Rickettsia tarasevichiae\u003c/jats:italic\u003e’ and other \u003cjats:italic\u003eRickettsia\u003c/jats:italic\u003e species allowed the creation of a new cluster with high bootstrap values within the \u003cjats:italic\u003eRickettsia\u003c/jats:italic\u003e genus involving this rickettsia, \u003cjats:italic\u003eR. canadensis\u003c/jats:italic\u003e, and three uncultured rickettsiae from plant insects.\u003c/jats:p\u003e","long_citation_html":"Shpynov et al.
